ALMOST A MOB – “We hear that some three or four hundred persons assembled together in Lynn last Sunday evening and proceeded with a drum and fife to Stream Mill Wharf for the avowed purpose of treating a secessionist with a ride upon a rail. The obnoxious personage was the skipper of a Maine coaster, who had expressed himself on national affairs in terms not quite consonant with loyal principles as understood by Lynn boys.  Upon arriving at the vessel, the skipper fastened himself into the cabin and notified his unruly visitors that if they broke open the door he would shoot the first man that appeared: whereupon the crowd, not being prepared for quite so rough a mode of warfare as the prisoner proposed, went off in search of some ‘leader’ to advise and direct.  They called upon James N. Buffum, who came to his door, and instead of telling them how to do it, advised them not to do it – making the very pointed suggestion that if they wanted to tar and feather a secessionist, they could find suitable subjects among the citizens of Lynn, who deserved it as much as the skipper did.  At this, three groans were given for Mr. Buffum, and the crowd dispersed.”
