Danvers, January 16, 1850….I saw Salvador Ferren outside the door
yesterday he seems to be getting better which is very desirable
Danvers, January 27, 1850 - Dear Son, I learn with pleasure from
Mr. Stimpson that your health continues good. You must be very careful not
to expose yourself in any way that will effect your health Your friends
here are all pretty well except William he is quite sick Johnathan and Henry
went up to see him yesterday they found him confined to his room and looking
very feeble Dr Lord has been to see him a few times wich seems to bee quite a
comfort to him I have to inform you that James P. and family are snugly
ensconced in the new House together with Nelson Stoddard and family for the
present there has been quite a freshet down in the village the past week the
rain fell in torrents last Tuesday filling cellars and overflowing canals and
carrying away skins to a considerable amount in some instances, they used the
fire engine to drive the water from the cellars there is a new school commenced
down in Mr. E. Upton's Hall for the benefit of all who wish to attend I expect
Mary Bush and Ann Derry will attend it keeps two evenings in the week and has
for its teachers John W. Proctor, Charles Northend and others
which I do not know. The weather here is very fine it seems like April
there is scarce any snow to be seen but the speaks for itself. I forgot to
tell you one of the items connected with the freshet Mr. B. Goodridge was
engaged in one of his building while the water rose so high that he called out
for help three men procured a boat and sailed him home he took out three dollars
and gave them and they gave him three cheers and so it ended. James went
over to the post office while the water was between two and three feet deep.
Mr. Ferren rode to Salem yesterday he seems to be
getting along nicely.
Tell Hannah Ferren she wont hardly know where she
is when she gets back into the new house instead of the old one the contrast is
very great.
I believe I have nothing more of consequence to
write news is quote scarce. Father talks some of going to California.
I will tell you your cousins Henry and Endicott King were here last Sabbath
Endicott was on his was to Washington He is our of counsels.
The great query here is which does
the present year belong to the first or last half of the century. All of
us here think the present year belongs to the first. Jonathan and Eben
think different.
I suppose you have seen the result of Mary’s
[Mary Upton Ferrin] petitions in the papers. They are laid aside.
