SOLDIER’S DEATH – “We are pained to hear of the death of another of our citizens, who probably received, while in the military service, a fatal shock to his constitution, which was originally rather too fragile for the rough life of a soldier. – We refer to Mr. Alphonso P. Rhoades, son of Mr. Joseph Rhoades.  He last year served nine months in the 5th regiment, Col. Pierson, and ever since his return from the field, has apparently been on the decline.  We formerly knew him well as a member of the High School, and since he left the school we have seen him often, and he has always borne himself as a steady, intelligent, moral and upright young gentleman. He was ever kind and courteous in his deportment and unassuming in his manners.”
