JAMES W. KELLEY – “Since our last issue, in which we reported as missing, James W. Kelley, of this town, a member of Co. A. 23rd Regiment, Mass. Vols., the following letter, received by his parents, has been handed to us for publication, which tells its own tale: Camp new Petersburg, Va., May 20th, 1864 - Dear Sir- Doubtless before this you have heard of the death of your son James W. Kelley.  In the thickest of the fight, overwhelmed by numbers, he fell doing his duty like a brave and gallant soldier.  Proudly can you point to his record without a stain, and say, he was my son!  He did his duty when thousands shrank in guilty fear at home.
With us, (his comrades) his name will ever be associated with all that is good and noble in life, and all that is generous and self-sacrificing in death.   Permit me, sir, to join with yourself and family in mourning his loss, for we regard his death as one of those costly sacrifices, which shall eventually restore our country to her former glorious position.  May God in his mercy strengthen and support you under this affliction, and afford that consolation which no words of mine can supply.
As soon as practicable all necessary papers by which bounties and allowances of both State and National Governments  can be secured, for the children, will be provided for.” Signed “Respectfully your obedient servant, Capt.  F. J. Babson, Comd’g. Co. A., 23d Regt., Mass. Vol. Infantry, Fortress Monroe, Va., To Mr. James Kelley, Danversport”
